Castelli and colleagues examined how exercise levels, sleep quality and chronotype, a person’s natural preference for being active earlier or later in the day, interact to influence both physical and mental health outcomes.

The researchers surveyed 691 physically active university students and used a series of internationally recognised health and wellbeing questionnaires to assess activity levels, sleep quality, biological sleep preferences and overall mental health.

Statistical modelling techniques were then used to identify relationships between these factors and determine how they influence one another.Castelli’s team found a consistent relationship between physical activity and improved psychological wellbeing.

Students who maintained higher levels of activity generally reported better mental health outcomes than those who were less active. However, exercise was only part of the story.

The study identified sleep quality as one of the strongest factors associated with mental wellbeing. Participants who reported better-quality sleep also tended to report significantly stronger psychological health, suggesting that sleep may act as a critical link between lifestyle behaviours and emotional resilience.

One of the more interesting findings involved chronotype. Individuals who naturally preferred earlier mornings generally experienced better sleep quality, which in turn contributed to improved mental health outcomes.According to Castelli and colleagues, sleep quality partially mediated the relationship between chronotype and mental wellbeing.

In practical terms, this means that some of the mental health advantages associated with being a morning-oriented individual may be explained by the fact that these individuals tend to achieve more consistent and restorative sleep.

While the study focused on university students, the findings have implications far beyond the academic environment.Modern life increasingly encourages behaviours that work against healthy sleep patterns.

Smartphones, streaming services, remote work and constant digital connectivity have blurred the boundaries between work, leisure and rest. At the same time, many people spend large portions of their day sitting behind desks, reducing opportunities for regular physical activity.

These challenges are particularly relevant in South Africa.Long commuting times in major metropolitan areas such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban often reduce the amount of time available for exercise and recovery.

University students face mounting academic and financial pressures, while many professionals are navigating demanding workloads in an increasingly competitive labour market. As a result, sleep is often sacrificed in favour of productivity.

The findings from Castelli’s study suggest that this trade-off may be counterproductive. Rather than creating a foundation for improved performance, inadequate sleep may undermine concentration, emotional regulation and psychological wellbeing.

For employers, the research adds to a growing body of evidence supporting workplace wellbeing initiatives. Programmes that encourage physical activity, flexible work arrangements and healthier work-life boundaries may contribute to employee wellbeing in ways that extend beyond traditional wellness programmes.

The study also offers an important reminder that mental health interventions do not always need to be complex. While professional support remains essential for many individuals experiencing mental health challenges, everyday behaviours can still play a meaningful role in supporting wellbeing.

There are, however, limitations to consider. The study focused exclusively on physically active university students and relied on self-reported survey data. As a result, the findings may not apply equally to older populations, less active individuals or people living in different social and economic circumstances.

The research also identified associations between variables rather than proving direct cause-and-effect relationships.Even so, the findings contribute to a growing consensus within health research that sleep and exercise should not be viewed as secondary lifestyle choices.

As policymakers, employers and healthcare providers continue searching for ways to improve mental wellbeing, Castelli’s research highlights a surprisingly simple reality: the foundations of better mental health may begin long before a person enters a doctor’s office.

They may start with a good night’s sleep and a commitment to staying physically active.

Source Information

Study Title: The interplay of physical activity, sleep, and chronotype on physical and mental health among university students

Authors: L.
