For a three-year-old, a minute can now contain an extraordinary amount of entertainment.
A character appears. Music starts. The camera changes. Something flashes across the screen. A joke lands. The video ends. Another begins immediately.
Short-form video has brought the rapid pace, constant novelty and endless scrolling familiar to adults onto devices that increasingly form part of children’s earliest years.
New research suggests this may deserve particular attention during a period when children’s own ability to regulate attention and behaviour is still developing.
A 2026 study of 214 children aged between three and five years found that greater short-form video use was associated with more inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and oppositional-defiant symptoms reported by caregivers.
The association was strongest for inattention.
The children in the study spent an average of approximately three hours per day using screens.
Remarkably, around 1.6 hours of that time was spent watching short-form videos.
The study, published in BMC Public Health, does not prove that short videos caused the behavioural differences.
But together with growing research on children’s digital-media environments, it raises a more complicated question than simply how much screen time a young child receives.
What kind of attention is that screen training them to use?
The researchers studied children at an important developmental age
Researchers Krittisak Anuroj and Vasini Aroonkamonsri recruited children aged three to five years from vaccination services and child psychiatry outpatient clinics in Thailand.
The average child was approximately 4.3 years old.
Caregivers estimated how much time their children spent watching short-form video content each day and completed a widely used behavioural questionnaire measuring symptoms related to inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, and oppositional behaviour.
The researchers also collected information on other screen use, parenting practices, demographic characteristics, medical or psychiatric conditions and caregiver wellbeing.
This allowed them to examine whether the relationship with short-form video remained after statistically accounting for several other factors that could influence children’s behaviour.
It did.
Greater short-form video use remained significantly associated with all three groups of symptoms.
The strongest association was with inattentive behaviour.
Higher use was also associated with more hyperactive-impulsive symptoms and more oppositional-defiant symptoms.
Short-form video is not simply television made shorter
The distinction matters because children’s screen time is becoming increasingly heterogeneous.
Thirty minutes watching a slow educational programme with a parent is not necessarily the same developmental experience as thirty minutes moving through dozens of unrelated short videos.
Short-form video platforms typically concentrate stimulation.
Clips are brief.
Visual scenes can change rapidly.
Music, sound effects, captions, movement and emotional cues may appear simultaneously.
When one piece of content stops being interesting, another can appear almost immediately.
This reduces the need to sustain attention through slower or less immediately rewarding sections of an activity.
That makes the format particularly interesting to developmental researchers.
Young children are still learning to direct attention voluntarily rather than having it continually captured by whatever stimulus is newest, brightest or loudest.
A developing child has to learn how to stay with something
Attention is not one single ability.
Humans are naturally equipped to notice important changes in the environment.
A sudden noise, movement or flash automatically attracts attention.
This form of bottom-up attention is useful.
But children also gradually develop top-down attention.
This is the ability to decide what deserves focus and to remain with it even when something else is more immediately interesting.
It is what allows a child to continue listening to a teacher while another child moves across the classroom.
It helps them finish a puzzle when progress becomes frustrating.
It allows them to listen to the rest of a story after the most exciting part has passed.
And it forms part of a broader set of abilities known as executive functions.
Executive functions include inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility.
They allow children to pause before acting, remember instructions, move between tasks and persist towards a goal.
These abilities become particularly important when children enter formal education.
The concern is not simply that the videos are entertaining
Children have always enjoyed stimulating entertainment.
The question is whether modern digital formats create an unusually dense stream of external cues that continually manage attention on the child’s behalf.
If something new happens every few seconds, the child does not necessarily need to generate the same degree of internal attentional control required by slower activities.
A picture book may require a child to remain engaged while an adult reads several sentences.
Building a tower may involve repeating the same action for minutes.
Drawing can include periods in which almost nothing externally exciting happens.
A conversation requires listening while another person finishes speaking.
These activities place different demands on attention.
Short-form media can instead provide a continuous series of reasons to look again.
But the research does not show that fast editing alone damages attention
This is where the evidence becomes more interesting.
It would be easy to conclude that fast-paced media are simply harmful to children’s brains.
A major 2025 meta-analysis suggests the evidence is not that straightforward.
Researchers Ashley Hinten, Damian Scarf and Kana Imuta combined previous experiments examining how media pace and fantastical content affected children’s attention and executive functions immediately after viewing.
For media pace, the analysis included 19 studies, 141 effect sizes and 1,431 children aged approximately 18 months to 10 years.
Overall, faster pacing did not produce a statistically significant reduction in children’s cognitive performance.
That result is important.
It means the widely repeated idea that rapid scene changes alone inevitably damage children’s attention is not currently supported by the combined experimental evidence.
Something more complicated appears to be happening.
Content may matter as much as speed
The same meta-analysis examined fantastical media.
Here, the researchers analysed 16 studies containing 121 effect sizes and 1,297 young children.
Children who had watched highly fantastical content performed slightly worse on attention and executive-function tasks immediately afterwards than children who had watched more realistic content.
The average effect was small but statistically significant.
One explanation is that impossible events place extra demands on a young child’s limited cognitive resources.
A character suddenly flying without explanation, objects transforming or physical rules constantly being broken may require more processing than events that fit a child’s existing understanding of the world.
But even this finding was highly variable between studies.
Some experiments found negative effects, some found no meaningful effect and others produced different results depending on which cognitive ability was tested.
A 2026 experiment produced another important warning against overstatement
A separate study published in Scientific Reports in May 2026 tested 65 children aged five to seven.
The children were randomly assigned to watch either a highly fantastical or a low-fantasy television programme for approximately eight minutes.
Researchers used eye tracking before and after viewing to measure visual attention and inhibitory control.
Contrary to their hypothesis, the highly fantastical programme did not significantly impair either measure.
Bayesian statistical analyses also supported the absence of a clear effect.
The finding does not overturn earlier studies.
Instead, it demonstrates why researchers are increasingly reluctant to divide children’s media neatly into “stimulating equals bad” and “slow equals good”.
Age, culture, previous media habits, the nature of the content and the cognitive task being measured can all change the result.
Short-form video may combine several characteristics at once
This makes the new preschool study especially interesting.
Short-form video is not defined solely by editing speed.
It often combines rapid pacing with novelty, emotional intensity, short duration and repeated switching between unrelated pieces of information.
The next clip may have completely different characters, sounds, subjects and visual styles from the one before it.
The viewer can also leave a boring piece of content almost instantly.
That experience is substantially different from watching a single 20-minute programme, even when both involve the same total amount of screen time.
This is why measuring children’s digital exposure purely in minutes can miss potentially important differences.
The same pattern has appeared in older children
The preschool findings are also consistent with another study from the same broader research project.
That earlier investigation examined 528 children aged six to twelve years.
Greater short-form video use was again associated with higher levels of inattentive symptoms reported by caregivers.
The relationship was stronger among younger children.
That does not establish that short-form videos damaged their attention.
But finding a similar association across both preschool and school-age samples makes the question harder to dismiss as something unique to one small group.
Children with attention difficulties may simply prefer this media
There is, however, a major alternative explanation.
The direction could run the other way.
A child who already finds sustained attention difficult may naturally prefer entertainment that changes rapidly and requires little waiting.
Parents of particularly active or difficult-to-settle children may also rely on short videos because they capture attention effectively.
In that situation, greater short-form video use would partly be a result of attentional difficulties rather than their cause.
Both processes could also happen simultaneously.
A child predisposed towards shorter attention may seek highly stimulating media, while extensive use of that media could potentially reinforce a preference for rapid stimulation.
The 2026 study cannot separate these possibilities because researchers measured media use and behaviour at approximately the same point in time.
The study did not diagnose ADHD
This distinction is particularly important.
The researchers measured symptoms using caregiver reports.
They did not demonstrate that short-form video causes attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
A child appearing more distracted, active or impulsive on a behavioural questionnaire is not equivalent to receiving an ADHD diagnosis.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition influenced strongly by genetics and other developmental factors.
The new study should therefore not be interpreted as evidence that allowing a preschooler to watch short videos will “give them ADHD”.
What it identifies is an association between one increasingly common form of media consumption and behaviours that include difficulty sustaining attention.
Another study suggests multiple screens may matter too
The broader media environment may be relevant beyond short videos.
Research published in Pediatric Research followed children from infancy into the preschool years and examined screen media multitasking, meaning exposure to two or more screens at the same time.
The study included 280 children.
Greater, repeated and prolonged media multitasking before age three was associated with more executive-function difficulties and lower cognitive ability at age three.
Stronger parent-child interactions and positive parenting were associated with fewer executive-function difficulties.
Again, this does not mean that screens alone determine cognitive development.
Instead, it reinforces the idea that how media enters a child’s environment may matter alongside the total duration.
The biggest effect of a screen may sometimes be what it replaces
There is another reason screen research is difficult.
Every hour has to replace something.
A child cannot simultaneously spend an hour scrolling through short videos and spend that same hour engaging in uninterrupted imaginative play.
Screen use may displace conversation with adults, physical activity, outdoor exploration, drawing, reading, boredom or sleep.
Many of those activities require children to regulate their own attention.
Free play is a good example.
A toy does not produce a new storyline automatically every fifteen seconds.
The child has to create one.
That difference may ultimately prove as important as the visual properties of the screen itself.
Boredom may have developmental value
Modern children’s entertainment is extremely effective at eliminating empty moments.
But development does not necessarily require every moment to be maximally engaging.
A child waiting in a queue, sitting in a car or waiting for food has opportunities to observe the environment, speak to an adult, invent a game or simply tolerate having nothing particularly exciting to do.
Those moments may feel inefficient to adults.
They also require internally directed attention and self-regulation.
If a highly stimulating video automatically fills every low-stimulation moment, children receive fewer opportunities to practise those skills.
This is a plausible developmental concern.
It is not yet something the 2026 study can prove.
Parents should not panic over individual videos
The evidence also does not support treating one cartoon or a few short videos as a developmental emergency.
Most experimental studies examining immediate cognitive effects measure relatively small and temporary changes.
Some effects disappear within minutes.
Other studies find no effect at all.
The bigger unanswered question concerns repeated exposure across months and years while attention systems are developing.
That is considerably harder to study.
Researchers would need to follow children over long periods while carefully separating media habits from family environment, genetics, sleep, parenting, education and pre-existing differences in behaviour.
The new study has several important limitations
The sample of 214 children was relatively small and came from one Thai medical setting.
It contained both children recruited from vaccination services and children attending psychiatric outpatient care.
That means it should not automatically be treated as representative of all preschool children.
Caregivers also estimated their children’s screen use themselves.
Parents may underestimate or overestimate how long a child actually spends watching particular types of content.
The behavioural outcomes were also parent-reported rather than being measured entirely through laboratory attention tasks.
Most importantly, the study was cross-sectional.
It can identify an association.
It cannot establish which variable came first.
The research is moving beyond the question of screen time
For years, advice around children’s media has largely revolved around a simple number: how many hours are they watching?
That number still matters.
But it may be an increasingly inadequate description of a child’s digital environment.
Two children could each use a screen for one hour and have completely different experiences.
One could watch a coherent educational programme with a parent and then discuss what happened.
Another could consume dozens of rapidly changing videos alone, switching subjects every few seconds.
Treating those exposures as scientifically equivalent because both lasted 60 minutes ignores what the child actually experienced.
The more useful question may be what happens when the screen turns off
The latest evidence does not show that rapid videos permanently shorten a child’s attention span.
It does show that children who use more short-form video are also showing more difficulties with attention and behaviour, including at an age when those abilities are still developing.
Experimental research meanwhile suggests that some properties of children’s media can temporarily change executive-function performance, although the effects depend heavily on content and context.
That leaves parents and researchers with a more nuanced concern.
The problem may not be that children’s brains become accustomed to one particular editing speed.
It may be that an environment capable of capturing attention effortlessly leaves less opportunity to practise directing attention deliberately.
A preschool classroom, a picture book, a conversation and a half-built puzzle cannot compete with an endless stream of perfectly timed novelty.
Nor were they designed to.
For a developing child, learning to remain engaged when nothing new happens for a few seconds may be a skill in itself.
